Our Street Was Paved with Gold

Our Street Was Paved with Gold

| 28 min

Filmmaker Albert Kish revisits Montreal's St Lawrence Boulevard in the '70s. The street, also known as "The Main," is a little Europe with many languages, foods and small courtesies that make a stranger feel at home.

Our family arrived as Displaced Persons in the late 1940's. We lived in the Park Ave. Mont Royal area and shopped almost exclusively along St. Laurent. Although some 20 later, this film captures the spirit and longings of immigrant families to this day. For me, this was the greatest neighbourhood in the world to grow up in. Whenever in Montreal, I too walk down the Main.

Not really a very good film, as it does not show much of the old Main I have seen much better films about the Main in this era.

Thank you for showing me the old shots of the street cars. My immigrant parents and I used to take them, six cents, to go to Rachel kosher poultry market. I like the presentation of present immigrants. Would have liked to see more of the local French Canadiens in the film but understand one must focus.
