Ballad to Cornwallis

Ballad to Cornwallis

| 8 min

This short documentary offers a satirical history of Halifax, written and sung in honour of the city's founder by balladeer James Bennet. Clad in period costumes, Bennet travels through time against a background of old photographs and paintings, archival and contemporary film footage, until he ultimately finds himself in the midst of the city's present-day building boom.

Too bad the statue of Cornwallis was removed because the city council foolishly submitted to a few ignorant agitators. I am not implying Cornwallis, or any prominent person throughout Canadian history, behaved like a saint. However, you do not learn about history by erasing it or applying contemporary morals (or lack thereof) in the judgment of actions in past generations. Will the same malcontents who obtained the removal of the statue, and generally besmirch Canadian history as a whole, also attempt to have this film erased?
