This short film, crafted entirely out of NFB archival footage by First Nations filmmaker Caroline Monnet, takes us on an exhilarating journey from the Far North to the urban south, capturing the perpetual negotiation between the traditional and the modern by a people moving ever forward.

Part of the Souvenir series, it's one of four films by First Nations filmmakers that address Indigenous identity and representation, reframing Canadian history through a contemporary lens.

I enjoyed this short film . To me the footage represents A clash of cultures. Subtle at first but then invasive. With the upbeat fast tempo music, it seems the content rapidly moves from the subtle clash of cultures towards the modern reality of life for first nations people. The images of hand fashioned canoe’s and snowshoes sharply contrasted by a keyboard with letter keys of a language that is under siege. The progression from hand tools to hardhats seemed reflective of a society that is racing further away from self-sustenance towards a capitalist society. #IndigenousFilm

That was fantastic! Thanks for bringing more of Canada to me. My little corner of Southern Ontario is beautiful, but we are so much more! I appreciate your work.

What the heck. I've been a member of NFB for a number of years. I really don't know enough. But this is an example of why I don't... you send me to a 3 minute clip... OK. Where do I click to actually buy/rent it? It seems to me that NFB suffers the same decades/centuries old problem that we have with engineers: they think they know what the end users need. But they never asked them! Shad up! Just ask! I have been confused more often than not with NFB. Hence my lack of participation. Maybe it's obvious, but I'm not seeing it.... !
