The NFB’s 72nd Oscar®-nominated film. In 1909, a dapper young remittance man is sent from England to Alberta to attempt ranching. However, his affection for badminton, bird watching and liquor leaves him little time for wrangling cattle. It soon becomes clear that nothing in his refined upbringing has prepared him for the harsh conditions of the New World. This animated short is about the beauty of the prairie, the pang of being homesick and the folly of living dangerously out of context.

En séance de remue-méninges, les élèves cherchent les raisons pour lesquelles le jeune Anglais a décidé de venir au Canada en 1909. Ils disent en quoi il n’était pas préparé à ce nouveau mode de vie. Qu’aurait-il pu faire pour avoir de meilleures chances de survivre à son premier hiver? Ils commentent l’analogie de la comète qui est présente tout au long du film. Ils font une recherche sur la vie d’un éleveur de bétail au Canada au siècle dernier. Activité complémentaire : Les élèves comparent l’élevage de bétail tel qu’il se pratique de nos jours dans les Prairies à ce qu’il était au temps des premiers colons.
