Les élèves comparent l’un des passages du film aux passages choisis d’écrivains tels Faulkner et Conrad, en se penchant sur la portée de l’allusion, les images, le style. Pourquoi Lowry est-il considéré comme un grand écrivain, en anglais, même s’il n’a produit qu’un seul chef-d’œuvre? Les élèves examinent pourquoi Lowry a choisi le Mexique comme lieu symbolique. Ils peuvent par exemple effectuer une recherche sur le Jour des morts, les volcans, la mythologie. Ils analysent les poèmes de Lowry et en discutent en établissant des rapports avec Au-dessous du volcan.
